There are many well established bands that have a big following. Some of them are main stream selling millions of records such as Coldplay or Placebo. There are also well established artists that whilst aren’t famous, have a cult following that make them well established, they are the artist that can pack a venue by putting a few emails out to select emailing lists. Kimya Dawson is one of my favourite examples of this. She is a solo artist with a very specific sound, and her music is truly beautiful! She has developed a huge following – huge if you include all her fans worldwide. If you only take the fans in a single area or country, she isn’t established, but thanks to the internet, she really is established.

So I received an email from a very excited friend of mine called Sanjay claiming he has discovered “the next best thing” and asking me to have a listen. Now I’ll be very brutal here. He didn’t encourage me very much by the fact that he wasn’t specifically asking me to have a look, but was in fact asking at least 900 people that he had mass emailed in blocks of 400 – that man knows a lot of people. How do I know this? I received the email 3 times as I’m on 3 of his lists! So who was he talking about?

Bender UK are what they are called. They are a ‘family’ band, the lead singer is a rather fetching lady called Lindsey Bender, backed primarily by her brother on guitar. I had a listen to the first song on their Myspace page, and found myself allowing it to run through to the other songs. They are actually quite good. In fact, they have this strange “grow on you” sound. The more I listen to them, the more I like them. Are they going to be the next best thing? Well, I’m going to with hold judgement till I have a chance to go out and see them live, but I think I will make an effort to go out and see them – if Sanjay ever gets himself organised enough to invite me that is.
