Classic Albums - Radio KAOS.

Pink Floyd were an amazing band. And not only did they deliver us with fourteen excellent albums, but they also jump-started solo careers for both Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Unfortunately, over the years, there has been a lot of bad blood between these two musicians, although they did manage to bury the axe (careful with that, Eugene) for their awesome Live 8 performance. It was the first time that Waters and Gilmour had played together in almost twenty-five years.

Both of these performers have recorded some brilliant material during their solo careers, but one of my personal favourites is, ‘Radio KAOS’ by Roger Waters.

(Note to Dave: - I do have a favourite one of yours too, Mr. Gilmour and I’ll maybe write about that some other time…)

‘Radio KAOS’ is a very cleverly written concept album. It tells the story of Billy and Benny, two brothers living in Wales. Billy is (apparently) a wheelchair-bound vegetable. However, as the story unfolds, we discover that he is actually a genius who can tap into radio waves with his mind. Using a mobile phone (stolen by Benny), Billy learns to ‘speak’ with an electronic voice and to hack into computers all over the world. As if this were not enough, Billy also makes friends with Jim, a talk-show host at Radio KAOS.

I have probably made it all sound very complicated when it is, in fact, very easy to understand. The album has been very carefully put together and the songs tell each segment of the tale perfectly. I will not spoil the ending for you, but I will say that it is very, very good.

An awful lot of imagination has gone on into the creation of ‘Radio KAOS’ and it is something that will stand out as being pretty unique in any collection. Waters songs and lyrics are excellent and the whole album works just as it sets out to.

The only thing I would say about ‘Radio KAOS’, which may not appeal to some people, is that it sounds very ‘eighties’. Not everything from that time exhibits the typical sound but Waters album definitely does… Although for me, it does not detract from the quality of the record whatsoever.

I just looked up this great company who agreed to give us a good discount on the CD packaging for the new band. I need input!
