Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: the question of whether or not Radiohead are depressing. It’s a debate without resolution, and one that everyone has their own take on.
I suppose you could take the fact that they are one of Great Britain’s favourite bands to mean that they aren’t depressing, seeing as the last thing that anyone reasonably wants to be—bar a really depressed unreasonable person who is in so deep he / she doesn’t know any other way—is that. Or you could say that we’re just all miserable; which would also make sense. There’s enough evidence to back the latter point up: have you ever held a door open for someone only for them to scowl in your face like you just spat in theirs?
Personally speaking, I don’t find their music particularly depressing. Thoughtful, yes, and often melancholy. But depressing? Part of me thinks that people who say that don’t know how to interpret their feelings and have already put up a wall against enjoying the music–after all, Radiohead aren’t the same as a lot of other bands, and change is not something which we all actively seek. And, conversely, that’s probably why so many people love them. So it could be that depressing seems like the only word that fits. After all, their music makes you think about things differently. And thinking full-stop isn’t something that everyone wants to do. That’s why we watch TV for hours on end, isn’t it?
Irrelevant of your opinion on that debate, one thing is certain: Radiohead care to be different, even the Bespoke Packaging Boxes they use for the band are different. And in a world of shallow musical thinking that’s something we should be celebrating. Love them or hate them, Radiohead are just a band doing what a band should be doing. Blazing their own path: searching for more even when it seems they have enough.
